Azores: Horta, the sailors' harbour

A walk along the waterfront of the capital of Faial: from the Império dos Nobres past the Jesuit church, the fort and the marina to Peter Café Sport and the old whaling factory at Porto Pim. Then, if you like, up Monte da Guia for the view over Horta and across to Pico. About 2.5 km, almost all of it flat. Monte da Guia adds some 1.5 km of climbing and the same walk back. FÁBRICA DA BALEIA: the factory holds a museum. Arrange a guided visit in advance. TO PICO: a ferry runs from Horta to Madalena on Pico; the crossing takes about half an hour.
