Azores: Graciosa, the White Island
🚶 25 km · 📍 5 stops · ⏱ ~300 min
A drive around Graciosa, from Santa Cruz through Vila da Praia to the Caldeira crater and the baths at Carapacho. About 25 km in all, with only short stretches on foot. Graciosa is called the white island, after its pale houses and its pale rock. Since 2007 the whole island has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve. THE CAVE: carbon dioxide builds up underground, so the air is measured there and the cave closes when the readings are high. You get in down a steep spiral staircase inside a tower, which is not for everyone. Follow the staff's instructions. OPENING HOURS: the cave and the baths are open only part of the day, and on some days not at all. Check in advance. Graciosa is reached by air from Terceira or Faial; ferries run mainly in summer.
