Azores: the whalers of Pico

A drive across the island: from Lajes do Pico on the south coast, where the story of Azorean whaling begins, over the mountains past Lagoa do Capitão to São Roque in the north, where the largest former sperm whale factory in the Azores stands. About 35 km by car, only short stretches on foot. MOUNTAINS: the road across the middle of the island is often in fog. Drive slowly. MUSEUMS: the opening hours of both whaling museums change with the season. Check them in advance on the Museu do Pico site.
