Azores: vineyards on the lava

A drive along the west coast of Pico, through the vineyard landscape that has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2004: the Museu do Vinho in Madalena, the vineyards of Criação Velha, the lava formations at Cachorro and the settlement of Lajido de Santa Luzia. About 25 km by car, with short stretches on foot among the pens. Walking on lava is awkward: it is uneven and slippery in the rain. Wear sturdy shoes, keep to the paths among the vines and do not climb the walls of the pens. A ferry runs here from Horta on Faial to Madalena; the crossing takes about half an hour.
