A walk through the centre of the capital of São Miguel, from the city gates past the parish church and the Esperança convent to the São Brás fortress. Then, optionally, the Gruta do Carvão lava tube on the edge of town. GRUTA DO CARVÃO: can only be visited with a guide. The short tour (30–45 minutes) starts at 10:30, 11:30, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:30, and since numbers are limited, booking by e-mail or phone is recommended. The long tour, lasting several hours, is by prior booking only. The entrance is on Rua do Paim, about 2 km from the centre. PINEAPPLE GREENHOUSES: the Augusto Arruda plantation in Fajã de Baixo, about 4 km from the centre, is open daily and the tour of the greenhouses is free.
