Azores: on foot to Caldeira de Santo Cristo

A walk to the north coast of São Jorge along the PR01SJO trail. It starts high on the Serra do Topo ridge, at the trail information board, and drops to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, where no car can reach. There and back is about 10 km. Going down takes an hour and a half to two hours; allow roughly twice that coming back up. A fajã is a flat shelf below a cliff, formed by a collapsed slope or by lava that ran into the sea. São Jorge is known for them along its north coast. CAREFUL: the trail is steep, slippery after rain, and the wooden walkways are slick. Take sturdy boots, poles, water and food. The way back is a long climb of several hundred metres. LANDSLIDES: the section from the Caldeira to Fajã dos Cubres, and the road into Cubres, were repeatedly closed by landslides and falling rock in 2025 and 2026. Before you set off, ask about the state of it at the Calheta town hall or from locals. Never go around a closure. TRANSPORT: there is no public transport here. If you want to walk only one way, arrange a taxi in advance.
