Azores: Velas, cheese and the northern fajãs

A drive around the western half of São Jorge: the harbour gate in Velas, the bell tower at Urzelina, the natural pool at Fajã do Ouvidor and the Uniqueijo dairy at Beira. About 50 km in all. ROADS: the roads across the island's ridge are narrow and winding, and the top is often in fog. Take the descent to Fajã do Ouvidor slowly. SEA: swim in the Simão Dias pool only when the sea is calm. DAIRY: tours of the production run on certain days only; arrange one in advance. The Atlânticoline ferry runs to Velas from Madalena on Pico; the crossing takes about an hour and twenty minutes. The number of sailings changes with the season.
