Azores: Sete Cidades

A day trip to the west of the island: the Vista do Rei viewpoint above the crater, a drive down to the village of Sete Cidades, a walk along Lagoa Azul to the entrance of the tunnel that carries water out of the lake, and a drive to Mosteiros on the coast. Optionally, the view of Lagoa Azul from the northern rim of the crater. WATCH OUT ON THE NORTHERN VIEWPOINT: the road up is very steep and narrow, with gradients over 12% and even steeper sections. There is little space at the top and turning is awkward. If you are not confident on steep mountain roads, skip it. THE TUNNEL: you can walk through the tunnel, but it is over a kilometre long, dark and wet inside. Don't go without a torch and sturdy shoes.
