Azores: Angra do Heroísmo

🚶 2.5 km · 📍 6 stops · ⏱ ~180 min

A walking loop through the historic centre of Angra, on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983. About 2.5 km, level in places and uphill in others. Angra is Portuguese for bay. The town grew up around the harbour where, from the 15th century on, ships sailing from India and from the Americas to Lisbon put in. EARTHQUAKE: on 1 January 1980 an earthquake destroyed much of the centre. Almost everything you will see has been repaired or rebuilt. OPENING HOURS: the palace and the cathedral each keep their own hours and tend to close on public holidays. Check them in advance. The easiest way to Angra is by car from Lajes airport, about 20 km.
