Azores: into the heart of Terceira
🚶 40 km · 📍 3 stops · ⏱ ~300 min
A drive into the middle of Terceira for three volcanic places: Algar do Carvão, Furnas do Enxofre and Gruta do Natal. About 40 km there and back by car; inside, you walk. ALGAR: 338 steps down and up, over ninety per cent humidity inside, and the stone is slippery. It is not recommended for anyone who has trouble walking, for pregnant women, or for those who fear enclosed spaces. Take a jacket. OPENING HOURS: Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal open mainly in the afternoon, and outside the main season only by arrangement. Check in advance with Os Montanheiros, the association that runs both caves. VAPOURS: at Furnas do Enxofre, do not step off the wooden walkway. The ground there is scorching, around 95 °C at the surface, and the gases rising from it are dangerous to health.
